International Women’s Day’s festivities: Prof. Mervat Abou Oaf TV Live Talk Show Guest Speaker:

On the occasion of the International Women’s Day’s festivities, and in her capacity as a member in the Media Sector of the Foreign Affairs Committee within the new formation of National Council for Women, Professor Mervat Abou Oaf was a guest speaker in the TV live show Zeina on Thursday, March 10, 2016.

Abou Oaf discussed the role of women in the new Parliament and current challenges they are facing specifically in media messages displayed in different channels of communication.

As an expert in media law, policy and regulations Abou Oaf discussed necessary features needed to be regarded in the draft of the Media Code of Ethics draft proposed to be reviewed by the Parliament concerning the future of the private and public media sectors and the press and the urgency to accommodate the need to assess the approaches toward private ownership of the media.

Abou Oaf further put special emphasis on the role of media in women’s political empowerment and awareness as well as their involvement in leading positions during the current imperative time in Egypt.

She criticized the s role of media gatekeepers in terms of not following the professional standards in conveying information with the required professionalism, objectivity and neutrality.

She underlined major drawbacks pertinent to media coverage in our current time on all platforms, traditional print, audio, visual and online. Abou Oaf emphasized the demand to rectify the demeaning categorization and stereotyping of females in various media productions.

She highlighted the need for a national strategy to define and promote women’s constructive and dynamic position aiming at removing impediments that may hinder their development within the Egyptian community.

Abou Oaf concluded stating that there is a necessity to implement, supervise and establish accountability in all legal and ethical affairs pertinent to the media sector in Egypt.
