Guest Speaker in “Faculty Awareness Protocols” Roundtable Discussion

Dr. Mervat Abou Oaf was a guest speaker in the Faculty Roundtable Discussion labeled, “The Whole Student: Faculty Awareness Protocols” organized by the Common Reading Experience (CRE) in partnership with the Office of Student Well-Being and the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at AUC.

In her speech, Abou Oaf disclosed her vision regarding the need for faculty to become more aware of the practical and realistic practices that are to be taken toward developing the commitment to fostering students’ wellbeing as well as their academic and professional progress. Abou Oaf acknowledged that the current pressures students experience and anxieties they tolerate might have a serious impact on their mental and physical state; a fact that has been intensified by social media and virtual reality the younger generation excessively encounter. She announced that AUC is privileged in many ways regarding the resources it offers for its students’ well-being including the disabled, referring to the AUC policy “Governing Academic Accommodations for Students with Disabilities” that was recently passed on the Senate floor.
As the media consultant and a board member of “AWLADNA Foundation for the Gifted”, she expressed her appreciation that President of Egypt Abdel Fatah Al Sisi, announced 2018 to be the year of the “disabled” and enacted the new Law No. 10 of 2018 on “The Rights of Persons with Disabilities” that was passed on February 19, 2018, after ratification by the Parliament. She explained that this law makes wide-reaching reforms to the legal rights of disabled people in Egypt, requiring for the first time that educational institutions adopt policies ensuring equal opportunities for disabled students.
The event featured the famous film festivals’ expert, founder and president of “AWLADNA” Ms. Soheir Abdel Kader as the keynote address. It was held Thursday, April 19, 2018, from 1-3 p.m. at a packed Moataz Al Alfi Hall, AUC New Cairo.
